Happy Easter

Easter tends to be pretty quiet at my house - TV, baking, that kind of thing. This year I made these cute little cookies for us to munch on. Let me tell you - I am in love with rolled buttercream. It looks like fondant, tastes like buttercream frosting, and it's easy. The only caveat is you need to have something to mold it with (think cookie molds or embossed rolling pins.) My family does not appreciate the flavor and texture of royal icing, so discovering this has been wonderful. Plus I have a gazillion cookie molds, so I was good to go.

We celebrated today with some cure bunnies for Easter and suns for spring; 'cuz everyone on Mackinac Island is ready for sunny weather!

Dying Eggs with Ties

 

We decided to try something new for Easter this year - dying our eggs with silk ties. I picked up the ties at the thrift shop for around $2.00 each, and the kids had a hoot. They chose their ties and wrapped the eggs, but the best part was unwrapping the them after they had cooked.

It was hard to know what they were going to look like while they were boiling, but in the end they turned out nicely. Though we discovered our pink and yellow ties didn't work very well - nor did that beautiful turquoise. However, the reds, blues and the greens all worked just fine. We might just have to try this again next year.

Happy Easter

Sorry about seeming to fall off the edge of the Earth this month. March tends to be incredibly busy for me between  kids; March is Reading Month, preparing for parent-teacher conferences and report cards at work; and spring break - I just didn't have time (or the energy) to blog too. 

Things will be winding down and after the first week in April I should have more time to spend here. Until then, I wish you and yours a very happy Easter!

Happy Easter

This year Easter is a bit unusual for us - we're home! Usually we all go to my parent's house for the weekend, but this year we decided it was time to invite them here. Not traveling has been so nice. Now I just need to go iron my good tablecloth and get out grandma's china so we can enjoy a fancy meal. We've been in our house six years and I think this is only the third time I've gotten out the good china.

My husband is making salmon. I'm not sure that it "goes" with the green bean casserole (my son's favorite) or the baked brie and homemade bread (my favorite) but I'm sure my mom will appreciate not having to cook.

My Grandma Lilly got this china when she got married in the 1930s. The pattern is called "Chelsea Bird," though it's not my favorite as china patterns go. In fact, I use to call it "the chicken china," but I love that it belonged to my grandmother. She lived in Florida, so I never got to eat off these plates as a child, but I think it would make her smile to know that I think of her every time we use them. I'm going to have to work on creating reasons to get it out more often. Any suggestions for me?

Bunny Love

Now that St. Patrick's Day is behind us, it's time to start thinking about Easter. Are you familiar with this book? It was one of my favorite books as a child. So you can imagine how incredibly happy I was when I found a prefect copy at my favorite used book store recently for $3.00. I loved it as a little girl because the story made perfect sense to me. As a four year-old I knew there had to be more than one Easter Bunny. I mean c'mon, one bunny can't do all that in one night (even Santa has helpers,) and somehow I knew the best Easter Bunny just had to be a girl, it just had to be.

Have I peaked your curiosity? I hope so because this book is absolutely darling. If you have little ones you really should pick up a copy. You won't regret it.
