Last Boat

As of today, at 4:30 PM, ferry service to and from the island is done for the season. Too much ice...
As you can see, lots of people tried to stock up on supplies for the winter. But don't worry, I'm not completely cut off from the outside world...

I just have to take this...

Now that must be an interesting feeling, not even a ferry boat. Is there a plane on permanent stand-by for medical emergencies? Up here the ferries are always docked at the smaller islands and the crew can be called out at any time for a medical transfer.

I would probably be one of the families trying to stock up in HUGE amounts for the winter! LOL. I'm glad to hear that you still have a plane that can take you on and off the island if you need to :) That is a neat pic of the ferry coming through the ice to.

Happy New Year!
wow, that's impressive! I am not sure I would be able to cope with being that isolated!

I wonder, have you lived on the island your entire life? How do you get mail and ups ect?
I'm sure you are very well prepared for the rest of the winter season.
I admitt it sounds cool!

Liz - I love the updates on what goes on on the island. It must take great preparation to be prepared for the winter. How often to you head back to the mainland? Is is really expensive, or not so bad?? So many questions for island living...... especially an island in Michigan weather!

Happy New Year!!

Wow, you really do live way up north! The photo of the ferry in the ice is beautiful.

There are a lot of interesting questions in these comments. I'd love to see you post more about how you and your family make it through the winter.

First thing I thought of when I saw that plane was Northern Exposure. You guys might as well be in Alaska - unless you can walk out across the ice... Hope you've got everything you need.

Wow. Stunning photos! How do you manage? I would be one of those people trying to do last minute stocking up, and then I would forget something vital! Stay warm :-)

Wow. Just Wow. I'm always intrigued by your life on the island. How many weeks do you usually have to wait for the Ferry to operate again??

Stay warm, friend! xo
