Done

The big Mackinac news today is that the boats are done for the season. Apparently they couldn't get out of the harbor in St. Ignace this morning due to ice and decided to call it quits. None of us are very surprised - it's been so cold lately - we knew it was only a matter of time...

Do you have a causeway connecting you to the mainland? We have a 7 mile causeway/road out to Antelope Island (Great Salt Lake) but sometimes in the Winter it is too dangerous to drive.

I'm already looking forward to tales of snowmobiles and wintertime adventure! May everyone stay safe this year!

How long until the ice bridge will form if it continues to be this cold?

Suzanne,
There is no causeway from the island to the mainland. There is an Ice Bridge that forms most years but I don't think it has formed yet this year. I live in the area but not on the island. For more info Liz wrote a bunch of posts about what Island life during the winter is like back in January 2010.

Love that you have a tag for "ice". One of my favorite St. Ignace stories was the winter someone's dog ran away and they found it on the island. Canine ice bridge escape!

I know you're not completely isolated up there, but to be honest I think no boats plus no ice bridge would make me feel a little panicky! A small price to pay for all that natural beauty, I suppose ;)

I hope you are having enough snow for the snowmobiles to get around. If not, I can send you some of ours :-) Happy Friday and a very Happy Weekend to you and your family Liz!!
