Just Say No

To spit-up covered shoulders...

We are having a regular population explosion on Mackinac right now. Julie just had her baby, Jessica might pop any day now, Vanessa is due soon, and Wendy's baby will be here in time for hunting season. Every one of them has or will get a set of these burp cloths from me. (Pattern found here.) I love these burp cloths that much. I love how soft they are and how perfectly they fit the contours of your shoulder.

I've learned not to scrimp on the flannel for these. The first few sets I made using inexpensive JoAnn's flannel which pilled quite badly after just a few washings. (Not very comfy on baby's little cheeks.) Now I make sure to use the more expensive quilt store flannel and get much better results. It's softer and holds up better to repeated washings , which is quite important for something that will be washed a zillion times during its lifetime. I wish I had known about these when my two were infants.

Do you have a baby gift that you always give?

I love these 'burp cloths' - my aunt made me some from terry cloth and they were great.

I always like to give a photo frame for a baby gift. But I do like to sew a gift too. I made a whole set for my first nephew - hanging toys, change mat, bibs etc... in matching fabric. My SIL is due next week and I am making a fabric book with felt animals. Better get onto it.....

Knitted hats are often a baby gift from me, but I don't knit much anymore. I've given some embellished onesies more recently. I'd like to try making the burp cloths made with cloth diapers and fabric-- those are always so cute.

I nearly always give a quilt if I have the time. The unfortunate thing is that most people are so enthralled with a quilt that they are afraid to use it. I say "Stick it on the floor, let 'em spit up on it. It's washable." But theya lways end up putting them on the wall. And these are not AMAZING quilts, I can assure you. They're pretty prosaic. But oh well. I enjoy making them and baby quilts are so quick I can actually finish them (unlike ones I have half done that I've been working on for 4 or 5 years).

i couldn't do without sturdy burp cloths when my babies were small! those are nice, Liz.

What a fun baby gift. The fabric is so fun and colorful. I didn't realize there were different qualities of flannel...I'll have to pay attention to that. I don't have a standard baby gift, but I often give receiving blankets or knitted baby hats.

Cute cute - good to know the cheaper flannel doesn't work as well, thanks! I usually make a quilt - but I don't know as many babies as you do, lol!
